A Study on the Physical and Mental Health Problem of Nursing Students


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the phenomen of the physical and mental health problem of nursing students and to identify the variables which were significant relation of the physical and mental health problem of nursing students and to analyze the correlation between the physical health problems and mental health problems.
The instrument used for this study was Cornell Medical Index. 154 items of the physical and 41 items of the mental health problem were included in this questionnaire, so that the grand total items were 195.
This study was applied to 324 current studying students at 00 Junior Nursing College in Busan from June 1st, to Dec. 10th 1983.
The data was analyzed by S.P.S.S. program.
The conclusions of this study were as follows:
1. The mean score of physical complaints in nursing students was 21.64 (S.D.= 12.34), and the mean score of mental complaints was 11.84(S.D.=6.57), and the mean score of physical and mental complaints was 33.39(S.D.=16.94).
2. The highest number of complaints among the physical and mental health problem items was in digestive system and in inadequacy, and the lowest number of complaints was in musculoskeletal system and in depression.
3. The number of physical and mental complaints in nursing students was found to significantly related to variables such as satisfaction in major(p<0.01), tem-porary absence from school(p<0.01), and religion (p < 0. 005), but not showed significantly in class level(p>0.05).
4. The degree of physical and mental disorder in nursing students was not showed significantly related to variables such as class level, satisfaction in major, temporary absence from school, and religion(p>0.05).
5. The number of physical complaints in nursing students was found to signifi-cantly right correlation with the number of mental complaints(p<0. 005). 6. Among the physical problem items, the degree of mental problem was predicted by nervous system, fatigability, frequency of illness and miscellaneous disease(p <0. 05). 7. The class level of nursing students was not showed significantly related to satisfaction in major and religion(p>0.05).
